The chiller at the Louis H. Lafontaine Hospital in Quebec was over 30 years old. The previous system installed consisted of a single 120 TR low pressure chiller that served several units and departments, including MRI, radiology, pediatrics, and kitchen.

The Problematic
The hospital had been planning to replace the chiller for some time, as in addition to being old and inefficient, it also used a phase-out refrigerant gas. There also was a capacity limitation, which would impact future cooling load.
Direct Energy sales representatives gave a presentation to the hospital's Technical Management team on the benefits of installing a SMARDT chiller. The presentation and assessment included technical and financial requirements. The hospital made the decision to purchase a 270 TR SMARDT, which consisted of three 90 TR compressors.
The main objectives were to ensure sufficient capacity for future needs, low costs and maintenance and energy saving benefits. The Solution Since installation in and start-up, a full cooling session went bye. At the same time, the hospital is converting three floors and approximately 20,000 square feet of the same building into administrative space. This has required the installation of five new units, equivalent to 35 tons of refrigeration, lighting, computers, photocopiers and other equipment.
The hospital’s technical staff and managers are very satisfied with the SMARDT chiller's low maintenance and low noise level. They also found it very easy to operate the touch screen, which transfers information via the BacNet interface to the building automation system.

Effects of a catastrophe
According to the Tustin Group, a mechanical contractor, a catastrophic failure occurred in the HVAC system.“We lost 60% of our capacity and we were close to the summer season”

We needed an immediate temporary solution before deciding whether to repair the current machines or buy new ones.” Tustin installed a temporary chiller on site.

The company reported that the plant that is planned to be developed will produce Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES), Sodium Alpha Olefin Sulfonate (AOS) and CocoAmide Propyl Betaine (CAPB), which will be sent to certain factories it has in Mexico, the United States and South America, as raw material for the production of detergents, soaps and body cleansing products.
The installed capacity will be for a production of 140 tons per day of SLES, 120 tons per day of AOS and 80 tons per day of CAPB, according to the information it presented to federal environmental authorities.
These equipments were installed for various areas of the Factory, including various critical areas, such as clean rooms, process rooms, offices and manufacturing.

In 2008, authorities in both Mexico and the United States launched the Smart Border 2010 project, which outlined the intention to build an alternative Mexico-U.S. terminal to alleviate congestion at San Diego International Airport. The project involves a terminal building on U.S. soil, close to the border, with parking, counters and customs offices that would be linked to the Tijuana airport by a bridge across the border.
